The ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS COMMITTEE meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30 PM. Current initiatives include publication of brochure promoting local produce outlets, organic gardening, and ethical eating, and enhancement of Third Creek Greenway from Concord St. to Sutherland Ave. through litter pick-up and native plantings. Sponsoring workshop February 26, 2011 with cooperation of UT Extension Service to help members and friends make their yards and neighborhoods more sustainable. Organized church recycling, conducted energy audit, recommended conversion of lighting (where feasible) to compact fluorescent lamps and installation of skylights in corridor. Developed solar energy proposal to provide roof-mounted 27 KW solar array which has been endorsed by the congregation – now pending grant funds from the Tennessee Solar Institute. Created Michelle Pfeffer Environmental Collection in TVUUC Library to commemorate Michelle’s life and her role in fostering our environmental program, and provide resources for members interested in environmental issues. Conducted seminars/workshops on “mountaintop removal” mining, food supply, energy conservation, use of rain barrels, and assisted in annual Earth Day services to celebrate the spiritual dimension of environmental activities – in “Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part”. Sponsored church candidacy for “Green Sanctuary”s certification by UUA.
Committee membership is open to members and friends of TVUUC. Contact Dick Trowbridge, Chair, for further information.
The TVUUC Environmental Committee leads the congregation in environmental issues, such as energy efficiency, recycling, green cleaning supplies, and upgrades to our facility.
